Relative to Advancement Via Individual Determination Week.

WHEREAS, The Advancement Via Individual Determination program (AVID) was founded in the City of San Diego in 1980 with the mission of closing the opportunity gap by preparing all pupils for college and career readiness and success in a global society; and

WHEREAS, AVID has grown from a single classroom in the City of San Diego to serve 418,000 students in over 2,000 schools across California and has expanded to serve over 1,400,000 students in more than 7,400 K–12 schools across 46 states, in addition to schools in Washington, DC, the Virgin Islands, Canada, and Australia and schools operated by the United States Department of Defense Education Activity; and

WHEREAS, AVID has demonstrated 46 years of closing achievement and opportunity gaps for the priority student groups identified in the local control funding formula; and

WHEREAS, In 2025, 90 percent of AVID high school graduates in California, versus 52 percent of all high school graduates statewide, satisfied the A–G subject matter requirements for admission to the California State University and the University of California systems with a grade of “C” or better in each of the required courses (A–G requirements); and

WHEREAS, In 2025, 93 percent of AVID high school graduates in California, versus 62 percent of all high school graduates statewide, completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA); and

WHEREAS, In 2025, 80 percent of AVID high school graduates in California, versus 62 percent of all high school graduates statewide, enrolled in postsecondary education; and

WHEREAS, The AVID system helps pupils think critically, collaborate, set high expectations to tackle future challenges, and develop skills in alignment with local portraits of a graduate; and

WHEREAS, Over 37,000 California educators are trained in AVID strategies, and AVID-trained teachers have higher rates of retention, supporting statewide teacher workforce priorities; and

WHEREAS, AVID’s K–12 college and career readiness system is an integral part of statewide postsecondary readiness and workforce preparation efforts, and supports dual enrollment, advanced coursework, and career technical education pathways; and

WHEREAS, AVID has a direct impact on career-relevant outcomes such as durable skill development, early career readiness, major selection, and postsecondary persistence; and

WHEREAS, AVID’s evidence-based Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading (WICOR) framework provides research-backed strategies that support California’s literacy initiatives; and

WHEREAS, AVID’s multilingual research and asset-based instructional approaches, including AVID Excel and AVID Emerge, support English language learners and multilingual students in alignment with California’s goal of 75 percent bilingual proficiency by 2040; and

WHEREAS, New research demonstrates the impact of AVID Elementary and AVID Excel on key pupil outcomes such as increased English language arts scores and grade 9 English language learner reclassification rates; and

WHEREAS, AVID should be recognized as a powerful tool for ensuring that California pupils develop the skills and beliefs they need to excel in a rapidly evolving world; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, That the Senate proclaims the week of June 15, 2026, to June 21, 2026, as AVID Week; and be it further

Resolved, That the Senate commends AVID’s 46-year contribution to California education and its impact on pupil achievement, educator effectiveness, and college and career readiness across the state, and affirms the value of including AVID as a partner in statewide postsecondary readiness initiatives; and be it further

Resolved, That the Senate encourages California school districts to consider AVID’s proven strategies to advance their educational goals; and be it further

Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
