Terms of Service
Effective June 9, 2026
Agreement
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of CALege, operated by Jamie Pew ("we," "us," or "our") at calege.com. By creating an account or using the service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the service.
What CALege is
CALege is a research and workflow tool for California legislation. It aggregates publicly available bill data, vote records, committee analyses, hearing schedules, and California Code sections from official state sources and presents them in a searchable, organized interface. Features include bill list management, position tracking, notes, and hearing schedule monitoring.
CALege is not affiliated with the California Legislature, the California Legislative Information system, or any state agency. Official legislative information is available at leginfo.legislature.ca.gov.
Accounts
You must create an account to access features beyond basic browsing. You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account credentials. You may not share your account with others or create accounts on behalf of third parties without authorization.
We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms or that we determine, in our sole discretion, are being used to harm the service or other users.
Subscription plans
CALege is currently in public beta. During this period, all accounts receive full Pro-level access at no charge. We plan to introduce paid tiers after the beta period ends.
We will notify users by email at least 30 days before any paid tier requirement takes effect. You will have the opportunity to review the pricing and plan terms before being charged anything. Your account and all data you have created will not be deleted when paid tiers are introduced — you will be given a clear choice about how to proceed.
Beta disclaimer
CALege is provided as a public beta. During this period, features, interfaces, and data pipelines may change or be removed without notice. Uptime and data accuracy are not guaranteed. We make reasonable efforts to keep data current and the service available, but this is a pre-release product and should not be relied upon as a sole source for time-sensitive or high-stakes legislative monitoring.
Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Scrape, crawl, or bulk-download data from CALege by automated means (beyond reasonable personal use)
- Attempt to access accounts, data, or systems you are not authorized to access
- Use the service to distribute spam, malware, or other harmful content
- Reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract the source code of the service
- Use the service in a way that violates any applicable law or regulation
- Resell or sublicense access to the service without our written permission
Your content
Bill lists, positions, and notes you create remain yours. By creating this content, you grant us a limited license to store and process it solely to provide the service to you. We do not claim ownership of your lists or notes, and we do not use them for any purpose beyond operating the service.
If you share a bill list via a public share link, the contents of that list become accessible to anyone with the link. You can revoke a share link at any time from your account.
Public legislative data
The bill text, vote records, committee analyses, hearing schedules, and California Code content displayed in CALege are California public records sourced from official state systems. This data is provided under the public domain and is not proprietary to CALege. We make reasonable efforts to keep it current and accurate, but we make no warranty about its completeness, accuracy, or timeliness. For authoritative legislative information, consult the California Legislative Information system directly.
Disclaimer of warranties
CALege is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that the data it displays is complete or current.
CALege is a research and workflow tool. It is not a substitute for legal advice. Do not rely solely on CALege for legal research or legislative monitoring in time-sensitive or high-stakes contexts.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of or inability to use the service, even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages. Our total liability to you for any claim arising from these Terms or your use of the service shall not exceed the amount you paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim, or $100, whichever is greater.
Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless CALege and its operator from any claims, damages, or expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising from your violation of these Terms or your use of the service.
Changes to the service or these Terms
We may modify these Terms at any time. If changes are material, we will notify you by email at least 14 days before they take effect. Continued use of the service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.
We may modify, suspend, or discontinue the service at any time. We will give reasonable notice of any significant discontinuation.
Severability
If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable or invalid under applicable law, that provision will be limited or eliminated to the minimum extent necessary, and the remaining provisions will continue in full force and effect.
Entire agreement
These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and CALege regarding your use of the service and supersede any prior agreements or understandings, whether written or oral, relating to the subject matter herein.
Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to its conflict-of-law provisions. Any disputes shall be resolved in the state or federal courts located in California.
