Privacy Policy
Effective June 9, 2026
Overview
CALege (calege.com) is a research tool for California legislation. We collect only what we need to provide the service, we do not sell your data, and we give you the ability to export or delete everything we have stored about you.
Information we collect
Account information
Account creation and sign-in are handled by Clerk (clerk.com). When you sign up, Clerk collects your email address and, if you sign in via Google or another OAuth provider, basic profile information such as your name. Your subscription plan level is stored in Clerk's user metadata. Your Clerk user ID is referenced in our database solely to associate your lists, positions, and notes with your account. We do not store passwords.
Content you create
When you use CALege, we store the lists, bill positions (support / oppose / watch), and notes you create in our database. This data is tied to your account and is not shared with other users unless you explicitly share a list via a public share link.
Usage data
We record when you last viewed a bill from a list context so we can show you freshness indicators (e.g., new amendments since your last visit). We do not track page views, clicks, or session behavior beyond what is necessary to compute these indicators.
Feedback
If you submit feedback through the in-app feedback form, your message is forwarded to us by email. Feedback messages are not stored in our database; they are retained only in our email inbox.
How we use your information
- To provide and improve the service (search, lists, bill tracking, hearing schedules)
- To send transactional emails — such as bill change alerts you have subscribed to — via Resend (resend.com)
- To manage subscription access (applicable after the public beta period)
- To send you operational notices (e.g., sync failures that affect data you rely on)
We do not use your data for advertising. We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties.
Third-party services
CALege uses the following sub-processors. Each processes data only as needed to provide their service:
| Service | Purpose | Privacy policy |
|---|---|---|
| Clerk | Authentication and account management | clerk.com/legal/privacy |
| Neon | PostgreSQL database hosting | neon.tech/privacy-policy |
| Vercel | Web hosting and file storage | vercel.com/legal/privacy-policy |
| Resend | Transactional email delivery | resend.com/legal/privacy-policy |
Data retention
We retain your account data, lists, positions, and notes for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, all data associated with it is permanently deleted from our database within 30 days. Backup snapshots held by Neon are purged on their standard schedule (up to 7 days after deletion).
Your rights
Regardless of where you are located, you have the right to:
- Access — request a copy of the data we hold about you
- Export — download your lists, positions, and notes in a portable format (JSON/CSV) via your account settings
- Correction — update your account information through Clerk's account portal
- Deletion — permanently delete your account and all associated data via your account settings or by contacting us
California residents have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), including the right to know what categories of personal information we collect and the right to non-discrimination for exercising privacy rights.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at [email protected]. We will respond within 30 days.
Cookies and tracking
We use cookies only for session management (Clerk authentication tokens) and user preferences stored locally in your browser. We do not use third-party advertising cookies or cross-site tracking.
Data security
All data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS enforced by Vercel) and at rest (Neon and Vercel Blob both encrypt stored data). Authentication tokens are managed entirely by Clerk. Share tokens for public list links use 128-bit random entropy.
Public legislative data
The bill text, hearing schedules, vote records, and statute content displayed by CALege are California public records sourced from the California Legislative Information system (leginfo.legislature.ca.gov) and related official sources. This data is not personal information and is not subject to this policy.
Children's privacy
CALege is a professional research tool not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under the age of 13. If you believe a minor has provided us with personal information, please contact us at [email protected] and we will delete it promptly.
Data breach notification
In the event of a data breach that affects your personal information, we will notify you as required by applicable law. Notification will be sent to the email address associated with your account as soon as reasonably practicable.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes to this policy, we will update the effective date at the top of this page and, where required, notify you by email. Continued use of the service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
