Reading CALege will always be free.

The information on this site is all publicly-sourced — CALege just does the work of compiling it into an easy-to-navigate format in one centralized location. During the public beta, all users will also have the ability to keep two short lists of bills with some tracking and note-taking functions.

CALege is run by one person — me, Jamie Pew. It began as a small project with the goal of fixing my legislative advocacy workflow. I was sick of downloading countless committee PDFs and managing several browser windows just to follow a bill’s code references. The project quickly took on a life of its own and grew into the research and tracking tool you have before you today.

I believe that better access to the machinery of Sacramento policymaking can be a democratizing force. My hope is that, in its own small way, this website removes some of the friction for folks trying to navigate that machinery. I know it has already done that for me.

Running the site does cost money. Transparently, I can’t afford to keep it running on a public platform out of pocket. In order to keep the tools here available to as wide an audience as possible, I am trialing a paid tier during this public beta. Here’s how it will work:

CALege Pro · public beta
$5.99/ month— or $59 for a full year
  • as many bill lists as you need, up to 100 tracked bills per account
  • unrestricted vote tracking, statute bookmarks, and note taking
  • full access to CALege alerts
  • new features as they are rolled out during the beta (welcoming your suggestions!)
CALege Team · public beta
from$24.99/ month
5 people$24.99/mo· $249/yr
10 people$39.99/mo· $399/yr
25 people$64.99/mo· $649/yr
  • everything in Pro, for teams of 5, 10, or 25 people
  • shared bill lists, notes, and vote tracking — your team sees the same working set
  • as many teams as you like; a person on two of your teams still counts as one seat
  • teammates get full Pro access while they're on a team you own
As early supporters of the site, subscribers to the CALege Pro beta will never have to pay above the current rate for as long as they stay subscribed — even after the site officially launches.

My goal is to keep this price at a level that is sustainable for hosting the site but accessible to all — whether you’re a student carrying out research or a professional lobbyist managing clients’ bills. As it stands, a beta Pro subscription costs an order of magnitude less than the nearest comparable software; I intend to keep it in that range.
