(a) The Governor, upon the recommendation of the Secretary of California Housing and Homelessness, may appoint up to three deputies for the secretary. The deputies shall be exempt from civil service consistent with subdivision (f) of Section 4 of Article VII of the California Constitution.

(b) In addition to any other provision of law, the Governor may appoint an assistant, who is exempt from the civil service laws pursuant to Section 4 of Article VII of the California Constitution.
